Product compliance FAQ

Mandatory safety standards are rules set under Australian Consumer Law for specific product categories — like toys, cots, bicycles and button batteries. If a product falls under a mandatory standard, it must meet those requirements (construction, performance, warnings and labelling) before it can be legally supplied in Australia. Supplying non-compliant goods can mean seizures, recalls and penalties.

The standards, permanent bans and recalls come from ACCC Product Safety (productsafety.gov.au), Australia's product safety regulator. The dataset is licensed under CC BY 4.0 and refreshed regularly. Every result links back to the original ACCC page so you can read the full detail.

No. It only means our dataset has no category-specific mandatory standard for that category. The Australian Consumer Law's general safety provisions and consumer guarantees still apply to every product, and labelling, electrical and other rules may apply. Always confirm with your supplier and a compliance specialist.

Most electrical and electronic goods sold in Australia must carry the Regulatory Compliance Mark (RCM) and, where in scope, be registered under the Electrical Equipment Safety System (EESS) before sale. Because this applies broadly to the electrical category, we flag it whenever you select it — but the exact requirements depend on your specific product.

The checker shows the most recent recalls from ACCC Product Safety, matched to each category automatically by keyword. That matching is a starting point, not a precise classification — open each recall to confirm whether it affects your product. For the complete, authoritative list always refer to productsafety.gov.au.
